Evaluate 1.1.1 Formative Assessment

Teachers should begin the learning process by assessing students' prior knowledge by means of a pre assessment. Once that is complete, instruction should be catered to meet the needs of the students' based on ability, level, learning style, and interest. Then, once all material has been taught for that unit, mastery can be assessed using a formative assessment.

Here are some sample formative assessment ideas that involve digital photography, a common tool that all students likely can access with their cell phones.

Ideas for 11th grade AP English Language and Composition:
1.       After reading their chosen contemporary novel, students will choose a character from their novel as their focus for a photographic character analysis. The series of photographs should be shot as if they are from the perspective of the chosen character’s eyes. The collection should convey the character’s strength, flaw, mood, and relationship with other characters.

2.       Pick a short story written by an American Transcendentalist. Stage a series of photographs to illustrate the conventions of the genre found within the chosen story, including imagery, symbolism, and tone.

3.       Students will create a series of photographs to serve as visual representations of tone words.
