To many, Learning Management System (LMS) and Course Management System (CMS) may appear to be synonymous terms. In reality, however, the two systems do have inherent differences.
Course Management System
The role of the CMS is to strictly manage the content that appears through a virtual learning platform. This is an interface where the content developer manages the way the information is displayed for all student users. Once set, the CMS remains the same, and any instructor can facilitate the course.
Learning Management System
The LMS has a larger scope and more features. It allows for instructors to customize and make adjustments based on the needs and/or interests of their students. The LMS may contain an CMS, but it is not a requirement. The instructors also have access to analytics which allow for tracking of a student's progress and grades.
