Navigate 1.2.1 Describe Roles and Functions in Online Learning Environments

Understanding the different platforms and roles associated with them is an essential component to virtual learning.

The Learning Management System (LMS) serves as host to all of the work, assignments, and assessments that a student encounters. The LMS may be created and set- up by an administrator and/or a course developer, but the day-to-day functions of the course are managed by the teacher/instructor role. The student accesses the LMS to find the coursework, assignments, and assessments that must be completed, as well as information about how and when assignments should be submitted. Once work is submitted through the LMS, it is the responsibility of the teacher/instructor to provide timely, authentic feedback to the student using the LMS.

In addition to the LMS, the student and teacher/instructor must also access the Student Information System (SIS). The SIS is where the logistics of a course are ironed out; here, students can register and pay for courses when applicable, and they can also use communication tools to directly message teacher/instructors and course administrators. Teachers use the SIS to view specific information about each individual student, and they can use the communication tools within as well. This is also where final grades are posted for students to view at the end of the term.
