Participate 4.1.1 Digital Rights & Responsibilities

To maintain the integrity of a Digital Learning Community, it is imperitative that a set of norms, in the form of an Acceptable Use Policy, is clearly established and available to all participants.

Here are the AUPs that are in place at my school. Students have multiple ways to access this information-- it is printed in their school-issued agenda, posted in each teacher's classroom, available copies are in the Media Center, and it is posted on our school website.

Reflection Questions

How can a DLC ensure that citizens within the community have access to an environment where an AUP protects members as well as the community itself, where individuals uphold laws, and a cooperative/collective venture provides robust, safe, and ethical resources and opportunities for learning?

A clearly established Acceptable Use Plan is necessary to make sure that all members of a DLC are protected and that they work to uphold norms in a way that promotes safe and ethical opportunities for learning. Prior to allowing users to particpate in a DLC, all potential members should be provided access to the AUP. If the information presented in the AUP follows Section 508 guidelines for Web Development, the needs of all users will be met; therefore, all users should be able to familiarize themselves with the content of the plan.

What is the best way to establish and maintain a flourishing DLC where citizens understand, observe, and are inclined to willingly support and ultimately benefit from Digital Rights and Responsibilities?

Allowing all members of a DLC to provide input and agree upon a set of norms to promote Digital Rights and Responsibilites will assit in ensuring that the DLC flourishes and that all members are willingly supporting the mission and purpose of the DLC. Revisiting the norms from time to time to make adjustments as the members see fit is a necessary component to maintain fidelty to the established Rights and Responsibilities.
